The Sant'Or 'Santameriana' Amphora Orange 2024 is a standout natural wine from the Peloponnese, specifically crafted from the rare, indigenous Santameriana grape that was nearly extinct until revived by this estate.

Sant'Or Wines is a family-owned traditional winery located in the historic village of Santomeri in Achaia, Greece. Led by grower Panagiotis Dimitropoulos, it is the first Demeter-certified biodynamic winery in Greece. Panagiotis focuses on minimal intervention and the revival of local varieties like Santameriana and Mavrodafni.

The vineyards are situated at the foothills of Mount Skollis at an altitude of approximately 600 meters. The 4.5-hectare estate is farmed using biodynamic and organic methods without irrigation. The Santameriana vines for this cuvée are approximately 17 years old, originally replanted by Panagiotis in 2007. The resulting wine typically shows complex aromas of dried apricot, honeycomb, orange peel, and bergamot, balanced by intense minerality and vibrant acidity.

Winemaking
The "Amphora" designation refers to a highly traditional, ancient vinification style, where the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in clay amphorae. The juice remains in contact with the skins for 20 days, resulting in its characteristic copper-orange color and integrated tannins. It is aged for 6 months in a combination of clay amphorae and cement eggs. Many of the amphorae used are reclaimed vessels upwards of 200 years old. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal sulfur additions.
