In a region justifiably renowned for its rosé wines, it is too often assumed that the reds and whites of Provence shine less brightly. Here in Portland, as the wet leaves continue to color our sidewalks, there is no better time of year to experience these unheralded red gems. Personally, they are as snug and comforting as my favorite black hoodie. A gorgeous example comes from Mas de Gourgonnier, situated in the Les Baux de Provence AOC. This domaine has been producing certified organically farmed wines since the early 1970’s, one of the first winemakers in the region to do so. The blend is comprised of 56% Grenache, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, 10% Carignan. It is evident from the first pour of this 2018 vintage, that the terroir is reflected in the glass. Aromatically, familiar Provençal garrigue leads the way with background notes of cherry compote, plum and hints of violets. Structurally, its high elevation vineyards (1600ft) allow for an acidic lift that enable the wine to capture moments of plush weightiness and brief tannic grips without committing to either of these spectrums. Its spicy and herbal finish make this an ideal dance partner for your favorite red meats, stews or root vegetables.
