Gaston Chiquet recently celebrated the centennial anniversary of its founding in 1919. Located in the Grande Vallée, it’s one of the largest grower estates with over 57 acres of vines, mostly within the villages of Aÿ, Mareuil-Sur-Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers. The style here relies on sélection massale to naturally keep the yields low, and since their terroir naturally produce wines with plenty of body and character, all their wines are vinified in stainless steel. This lovely Blanc de Blancs d’Aÿ is a peculiar terroir-driven style that highlights Chardonnay grown in an area highly regarded for its Pinot Noir. Aromas of baked apples, pineapple, pomelos, lemon zest and crème fraiche, ride a charged acidity that flows through a broad, slightly creamy vinous texture which the finessed bubbles dance over. A nice touch of white flowers, almonds and chalk complete its savory finish. Highly aromatic with a balanced weight and texture.
