Domaine Lafarge was run for the last 60 years by the legendary Michel Lafarge and nowadays is run by his son Frédéric assisted by his wife Chantal, and daughter Clothilde. This domaine is famous for producing some of the greatest traditional Volnays, from biodynamic farmed vineyards.
The Clos de Chateau des Ducs is located in Volnay, in the humble garden of the Lafarge Domain—making this hidden gem a true clos as well as a true monopole. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 290 meters. The slope is very gentle. It faces southeast. The vineyard is quiet and small with lush green trees, and there are even a few wandering chickens. The soil here is deep because it stays in place thanks to the walls of the clos. The soil is brown (very little iron) and clay-rich. After about 35-40 cm of brown clay soil, there is a 25-centimeter layer of gravel—giving the vineyard excellent drainage.

"Just racked this week. The Lafarges decided against their hand destemming in 2023 because there wasn’t time and the grapes were warm. A solid dark centre with crimson rim. The nose is slightly muddled after racking. I do like the structured aftertaste, less tannic than Clos des Chênes but beautifully interweaving with the sumptuous fruit and very long. Drink from 2033-2044. Tasted Dec 2024."
