The Adega de Monção 'Muralhas de Monção' Vinho Verde 2020 is an excellent case study in how the Monção e Melgaço subregion subverts standard, mass-market Vinho Verde tropes. Far from the low-alcohol, highly carbonated, and slightly sweet commercial examples often associated with the region, this 12.5% ABV bottling delivers a completely dry, structurally sound profile driven by a masterclass blend of 85% Alvarinho and 15% Trajadura. Shifting the focus away from injection-carbonated fizz, it relies on a very subtle, integrated needle-prick of effervescence that elevates its texturally complex, medium-bodied weight. The 2020 vintage captures a pristine snapshot of the subregion's unique microclimate—where Atlantic influences meet continental protection—resulting in an 89-point Wine Enthusiast rated wine that emphasizes varietal purity over cheap tricks.
On the palate, this wine is a playground for terroir geeks, offering a sharp, linear, high-acid skeleton that effortlessly supports its phenolic weight. Lush orchard and stone fruits—predominantly underripe peach, apricot, and green apple—are juxtaposed against a intensely distinct flinty, crushed-stone minerality and sharp citrus zest. Trajadura fills out the mid-palate with soft white floral notes, while the dominant Alvarinho drives a long, laser-focused, sapid finish that begs for high-acid food pairings like raw oysters, crudo, or razor clams. It is an authentic, highly serious expression of Minho viticulture that over-delivers on structural complexity, making it a perfect recommendation for clients who appreciate transparency, tension, and immense value in their glass.

Winemaking
Fermented entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine undergoes minimal intervention and no malolactic fermentation to fully preserve its electric natural acidity and crisp primary fruit aromas. The winemaking team skips artificial carbonation, opting instead to trap a tiny trace of natural, fermentation-derived carbon dioxide at bottling to give the wine its signature, ultra-fine textural lift.
