Sergio's Pick
I like things that are punk, and that goes for the wines that I enjoy too. It’s an attitude that questions social norms and challenges rules. This wine does exactly that.
Italian wine is my go-to for attitude driven bottles and this one literally labels itself as such. The vineyards for this wine are adjacent to the Fossatti Cru which straddles the subzones of La Morra and Barolo itself. Despite sharing the same soil type, and orientation, these vineyards are not recognized by the original appellation laws and are thus forbidden from using Barolo on its label.
So what do you do when you have an unrecognized, high quality site but can’t label it as such: You call it a table wine and rely on wine geeks like me to tell you how good it is.
Classic Barolo notes of ripe cherries, dried roses, truffles, eucalyptus and iron greet you from the glass. The palate steals the show, with a smooth, concentrated mouth feel that glides towards velvety tannins that won’t rip your face off.
This is a seriously delicious Nebbiolo.
