We pride ourselves in sourcing new, unknown producers for our wine club members and this inaugural vintage from Mathilde Magne was an amazing discovery. While aromas like stone fruit, white flowers, almonds, saline and honeysuckle take time to evolve, the palate steals the show. The texture is silky/creamy with a lovely interplay between acid and richness. The finish is dry and lengthy with lasting notes of baking spices and dried apricots with a touch of saltiness. 30 minute decanting recommended.
Mathilde Magne is located in the Rochefort sur Loire, which is a region best known for its sweet Coteaux du Layon dessert wines. Its potential for producing dry wines is currently being explored by new producers like Magne and established ones like Chateau de Plaisance. This is how appellation laws get altered, and for the time being Magne is forced to place the Vin de France label on the bottles since dry Chenin Blanc is currently not allowed for production. These are exciting times in this area, which we wholeheartedly believe will make a name for itself in the not-so-distant future.
