Crafted by a grower affectionately dubbed the "Wizard of Grignolino", Silvio Morando represents the fourth generation of his family farming in Vignale Monferrato, a zone dedicated to rescuing heritage varieties from the shadow of Nebbiolo and Barbera. Grignolino is notoriously difficult to grow and vinify, yet Morando captures its paradoxical charm perfectly: the wine pours a brilliant, translucent pale ruby, reminiscent of an infused rosé, but hits the palate with surprising structure. The 2024 vintage balances Piedmont's cooler, wetter spring conditions with a warm summer ripening period [wine-searcher.com], yielding a bone-dry red that trades mass-market sweet fruit for highly localized, varietal transparency and a signature prickle of firm, natural tannin.
On the palate, this wine offers a fascinating, high-tension structural profile driven by its native anatomy. It bursts with high-toned, electric aromas of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and fresh rose petals, undercut by a savory web of white pepper, dried herbs, and an intense, chalky limestone minerality. Because Grignolino contains an unusually high number of seeds—deriving its name from the local dialect grignòle—it possesses a firm, structural, and drying seed tannin that frames the mid-palate. This fine-grained grip is effortlessly balanced by a vibrant, linear acidity and a refreshing, entirely unoaked crunch. It is a weightless, highly sapid, and aromatic red that should be served with a slight cellar chill, making it a perfect geek pairing for traditional salumi, pork loin, or mushroom dishes

Soil
15-hectare estate located at an elevation of roughly 750 feet above sea level in Vignale Monferrato. The vines enjoy a prime south/southwest exposure, digging into poor, fast-draining calcareous marl, limestone, and ancient sandy clay outcroppings filled with fossil beds.
Winemaking
Short maceration and gentle pressing. Grignolino grapes have a high number of seeds which can make very tannic wines with lots of green notes if not handled delicately. The wine ages for 9 months in a combination of stainless steel and cement before it goes to bottle. The wines receive a small dose of SO2 at bottling and are bottle unfined and unfiltered.
