Sergio's Pick
Rarely in the world of wine do you find a producer who crafts the finest possible example of a varietal in their region at an approachable price point. Sergio Arcuri’s Superiore Riserva bottling is perhaps the apex for Gaglioppo. Sourced from nearly 90-year-old vines, Più Vite spends a minimum of 4 years aging in concrete vats and an additional 1-2 years in bottle before it becomes available. Arcuri’s Riserva seems more like a library offering rather than a new release. Matured notes of cherry compote figs, crushed roses, tar, cigar box, and leather attack the senses. The acid remains lively and carries with it a velvety texture that are interrupted by firm dusty tannins. The finish is endless, with notes of cinder, iron and dried herbs. If it sounds like a description for aged Barolo, it is a testament for what Gaglioppo can achieve. A must try for fans of aged Nebbiolo.
