The Mouzon-Leroux domaine has a rich winemaking tradition in Champagne dating back to 1776. They work almost exclusively with estate owned vineyards within the Verzy Grand Cru. Current winemaker Sébastien Mouzon is leaving behind his imprint of Verzy, first by converting their vineyards to biodynamic farming methods, and secondly by being one of the few producers focusing squarely on Verzy. Oddly enough, despite its status, fruit from Verzy has traditionally been blended with neighboring Grand Crus from this part of the Montagne de Reims. The more restrained wines from Verzy are finally being able to speak with a single voice, and the results are truly captivating. ‘L’atavique’ is a blend of nearly 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay, most of it coming from the 2013 harvest with the assemblage rounded out by 2012 and 2011. The aromas from the glass emanate with red plums, nectarines, orange zest and hazelnuts. The vibrant acidity carries compact fine bubbles while a lovely frothy mousse weaves over a mineral-rich medium body with a silky, fleshy texture. The red berry notes become more pronounced as the wine makes its way towards a nutty, slightly spicy, and dry finish. Mouzon expertly balances vinous-forward stylings with the precision of the bubbles and elegance of the mousse. Sized appropriately for your holiday season convenience.
