Notes from Flatiron Wine and Spirits:
"Monchiero’s 1999 Barolo is a beautifully evolved wine from one of Barolo’s most revered crus—Rocche di Castiglione—a site known for its floral perfume, mineral depth, and long-aging potential. And in a vintage like 1999—structured, balanced, and slow to develop—this bottle now offers a masterclass in mature Nebbiolo.
After 25 years, the fruit has softened into the background, giving way to aromas of dried cherry, rose petals, worn leather, balsamic herbs, and earthy spice. The palate is silky and savory, with tannins that have melted into the wine’s frame and a lingering finish laced with iron, forest floor, and a trace of menthol freshness.
Made in a traditional style with extended maceration and aging in large oak casks, this Barolo has aged gracefully without losing its core of structure or identity. It’s the kind of wine that rewards quiet attention, full of nuance and old-vine character.
Perfect with braised meats, aged cheeses, or a special evening that calls for a mature wine with a story to tell. Decant gently, or let it unfurl slowly in the glass."
