Notes from Parcelle:
While a lot of Rheingau riesling is rich and creamy, Hans Josef Becker does things differently. His pristine vineyards and barrel-aging regimens yield smoky, energetic white wines that combine Mosel-like weightlessness with Chablis-like mineral notes. It's a very appealing combo, which is very much on display in this lithe, dry wine.
Once a forgotten gem, the Rheingau wine region is reclaiming its former glory, thanks to renewed investment and the efforts of estates like J.B. Becker. Since taking over in 1971, Hans-Joseph Becker has championed bone-dry Rieslings, pushing against the conventions of the time. His wines have striking structure, cellar longevity, and very little residual sugar, resembling Rheingau wines of 100 years ago.
God bless Kabinett Trocken. The 2022 version has the pulse of a Kabinett Trocken (a certain briskness, an energy, a diminutive form and bracing minerality) yet it’s also a bit more diffuse and floral than the 2020. It’s absolutely lovely and it’s also unfortunately something of a rare wine in 2022."
