The Eyrie Vineyards is a pioneering and historic winery, founded in 1965 by David and Diana Lett, who were the first to plant Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Their commitment to a minimal intervention philosophy and organic, dry-farmed viticulture has established a legacy of elegant wines known for their balance and ability to age for decades. A landmark moment came when their 1975 Pinot Noir competed successfully with top Burgundies in a 1979 tasting, putting Oregon on the global wine map. Today, the family legacy is continued by their son Jason Lett, who maintains a deep respect for the original vines and non-interventionist approach while also introducing innovative vineyard practices.
The Chasselas Doré grape variety originated in the Alps of Switzerland and France and thrives in the well-drained, iron-rich, volcanic Jory soils of Oregon's Dundee Hills. The grapes for the Eyrie wine come specifically from two rows of organically farmed, ungrafted vines within the Sisters Vineyard, a site known for a mix of Jory and marine sedimentary soils that help the deep roots survive the dry summers without irrigation.
