Founded in the late 18th century, Eric Rodez is the 8th generation to lead this family run estate in the Montagne de Reims. With most of their vineyards residing in Ambonnay, Rodez specializes in opulent Pinot Noir based Champagne. Influenced by stints in Alsace, Rodez began farming his vineyards organically and eventually converted them all to biodynamic. Rodez was the former oenologist at the historic Krug, where he acquired his penchant for blending and greatly influenced his winemaking. The house style here is regularly non-malolactic, mostly barrel fermentation and aging, and a heavily on reserve wines; often blending anywhere from 5-10 different vintages in his final cuvée. Needless to say, these are wines of deep complexity. This Brut Rosé is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: 40% of the blend is Pinot Noir that has spent time on the skins, 30% Pinot Noir direct press, and 30% Chardonnay. Just over half of the blend is comprised of reserve wines, with the same amount undergoing malolactic fermentation. Finally, most of the wines are fermented and aged in small oak barrels. This intense vineyard and cellar work manages to achieve a striking balance between racy acidity, exuberant bubbles and a hefty vinous profile without the aid of a large dosage. Truly blown away by how this wine harmoniously interacts.
