2023 is the inagural and much anticipated release from this new domaine with some history and great parcels with vine age. Jean's father Tom came from England in the 60's and began to cobble together a 2ha domaine. In the early 2000's Tom got sick and the vineyards were rented to Meo-Camuzet for nearly 20 years - so they have been in good hands - he passed away in 2015. After deccieding to return to Burgundy to take teh viens back, Jean spent time with Charles Lachaux leading up to the debut of the domaine wines. Vineyards utilize high trellising, cover crops, low-to no till. The wines 100% whole cluster with the fermentation starting out with a Pied de cuve, and NO OAK. All the elevage is done in ceramic globes and eggs for 24 months.
Winehog:
"The Chambolle Les Cras 2023 is from a very interesting plot just up from the village (there is a staircase going up from the road below). It has a deep, vivid minerality and is perhaps the most complex of the wines in the Marshall portfolio. The rich and vivid fruit gives this a lovely hedonistic note. The further elevage and ageing have mainly increased the intensity of the fruit … giving a fuller wine. The minerality has gained weight and indicates further cellaring … a vrai Cras!"
Wine Advocate:
"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is another rather dark and brooding wine, unfurling in the glass with notes of raspberries, red berries and black plum compote. Medium to full-bodied, rich and broad, with an inky core of fruit and plenty of powdery structuring tannin, it's built for the cellar."
