The Caravaglio Salina Malvasia 2024 is a vivid expression of the Aeolian Islands, crafted by Antonino "Nino" Caravaglio, whose family has cultivated these volcanic soils since the 1500s. Based on the island of Salina, just north of Sicily, the estate was a pioneer in organic viticulture, with Nino seeking certification immediately upon founding the modern cantina in 1992. This 2024 vintage continues a storied legacy of "island wines" that are shaped by six inactive volcanoes and Mediterranean sea winds, which naturally protect the ungrafted vines from pests like phylloxera. Market interest remains high for this artisanal label, as it represents a unique, low-intervention alternative to mass-produced Sicilian whites.
In the cellar, the 2024 Salina Malvasia is handled with a "no makeup" philosophy to preserve its raw volcanic energy. The blend consists primarily of Malvasia di Lipari, hand-harvested from 20 small parcels located in the high-altitude Malfa district. After a short three-month rest on fine lees to add a silken texture without masking the mineral core, the wine emerges with its signature "saline snap" and aromas of Meyer lemon, jasmine, and Mediterranean herbs. Its bright acidity and salt-kissed finish make it an quintessential pairing for local fare like grilled octopus or pasta with capers.
