Founded in 2002, Aphros is a project led by biodynamic pioneer Vasco Croft, one of only two producers crazy enough to attempt (and succeed!) in this method of cultivation in the rainy Vinho Verde region. Equal parts philosopher, farmer and winemaker, Croft has led an ambitious project that combines ancient traditions and modern scientific understanding, resulting in wines of truly exceptional energy and quality.

Aphros’s ‘Palhete’ is a return to an old tradition of blending red and white grapes to make a refreshingly light bodied and aromatic red wine. As an anonymous wine in a glass, it is already fascinating: pleasant raspberry aromas mingle with savory bread notes, while zippy acidity and creamy texture balance each other on the palate. But it’s much more than just another wine in a glass: produced entirely without electricity, it was destemmed by hand, crushed by foot, aged in amphora, and even pumped by hand into bottle. A labor of love and an exploration of our past, it shows what is achievable with minimal technology.
