Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a pioneering Sicilian estate that recognized the potential for Etna to produce world class wines, which they’ve been doing since the winery’s inception. Reviving long forgotten ancient vineyard sites affords them the opportunity to work almost exclusively with older vines, some of which being pre-phylloxera plantings. While their reds, deservedly, garner most of the attention, this Santo Spirito bottling may represent the apex of Carricante. The complexity permeates every facet of this wine. Green apples, bosc pears, and lemon oil aromas are intertwined with mint, aniseed, hints of white flowers and wet rocks. The acidity is deceptively lively as it carries a mineral-rich silky/slightly oily body that crescendos towards a long saline, honeyed finish. Burgundian in its winemaking techniques, style, and elegance.
