About the producer:
Salem Wine Company is a second label produced by Evening Land Vineyards. The intention behind the project is to make wines that are approachable both in terms of flavor profile and price point. There are no shortcuts or compromises in production however, as all of the fruit for their 2023 Eola Amity Hills Pinot Noir comes from Evening Land's historic estate vineyard, Seven Springs Vineyard. Similarly, the fruit is handled with the same care in the winery as wines that are bottled under the Evening Land label.
About the cuvee:
Seven Springs is farmed biodynamically by the Evening Land team, and the fruit for this cuvee comes primarily from east facing blocks. Though it is over 90% Pinot Noir, there is a touch of Gamay included, giving it a bit of fruitful exuberance and generosity. In the winery, the fruit was primarily destemmed and fermented by native yeasts in temperature controlled tanks, before being aged in neutral Burgundy barrels for 16 months.
On the nose, woody spice and ripe red cherry aromas balance one another nicely. Gentle, very fine tannins are reminiscent of the clay soils that bore the fruit. Its bright red cherry flavors are exuberantly pleasant, but it is neither overripe nor out of balance. An excellent value local Pinot Noir - a phrase we get to say less and less frequently.
