Domaine Lafarge was run for the last 60 years by the legendary Michel Lafarge and nowadays is run by his son Frédéric assisted by his wife Chantal, and daughter Clothilde. This domaine is famous for producing some of the greatest traditional Volnays, from biodynamic farmed vineyards.

The Clos de Chateau des Ducs is located in Volnay, in the humble garden of the Lafarge Domain—making this hidden gem a true clos as well as a true monopole. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 290 meters. The slope is very gentle. It faces southeast. The vineyard is quiet and small with lush green trees, and there are even a few wandering chickens. The soil here is deep because it stays in place thanks to the walls of the clos. The soil is brown (very little iron) and clay-rich. After about 35-40 cm of brown clay soil, there is a 25-centimeter layer of gravel—giving the vineyard excellent drainage.

"The 2022 vintage was showing well during my annual barrel tasting chez Lafarge, emphasizing the charming, pretty side of the year. The team began picking on August 26, another early harvest. As usual, reds were destemmed, in some cases manually, and élevage is taking place in predominantly used barrels, with the Lafarge's habitual racking with aeration. The result is wines with a resolutely old-school style that have a good track record of evolving gracefully in the cellar."
