Feudi di San Gregorio, along with a small handful of producers in Campania and Basilicata, are in the upper echelon of wineries setting the standard for Aglianico as one of the world's great age-worthy red wines. They have worked tirelessly to preserve many of Irpinia's historic vineyards - pre-phylloxera, centennarian vines that function as a living museum of ancient training and trellising techniques, as well as clonal diversity. Their chief vineyard manager, Pierpaolo Sirch, has become an internationally renowned figure for his groundbreaking work in pruning. Antonio Capaldo, the family winery's current torchbearer, has been a regular contributor to international initiatives such as the annual Old Vines Conference in London, helping to elevate the global reputation of Campania. Through partnerships with the Universities of Milan and Naples, San Gregorio has also helped to quantify the value of old vines and traditional vine training systems with cutting edge research.

All of the above says nothing about the exceptional quality of their wines. Several of their single vineyard, old vine cuvees, which see prolonged aging both in barrel and bottle prior to release, are among Italy's most internationally recognized wines. Their "Rubrato" bottling highlights the more playful, pleasant potential of Aglianico. With a relatively short maceration time to limit tannic extraction, and elevage for less than one year in stainless steel, Rubrato is a gentle expression of the grape, with bright, fresh blackberry flavors, earthy and herbal undertones, and just enough tannin to be a highly versatile pairing wine.
