Notes from Rare Wine Co.:

"Barbeito’s Managing Director, Ricardo Freitas, is arguably the most dynamic winemaker in Madeira, acquiring a well-deserved reputation as the island’s 'game changer.' Freitas’ small-batch releases have championed forgotten vineyard sites and varieties, while forging a strong link between Madeira’s rich history and its future development. Barbeito is a great defender of traditional winemaking and long aging in cask ('canteiro') as key to Madeira’s most compelling wines."

Flor notes, about the cuvee:

Barbeito is alone in their pursuit of terroir-driven expressions of Madeira. This wine is a single vineyard cuvee, coming from a plot in the north of the island close enough to the see to be affected by salty sea spray. Made in the traditional method, this Sercial bottling comes from a single 620 liter barrel. Fewer than 100 cases were produced.

It shows all of the gorgeous hallmarks of a 10 year Sercial - profound aromas of toasted caramel, and candied orange peel, and palate staining flavors of honey and walnuts, with a deft balance of piercing acidity and light sweetness. What sets it apart is its distinctively salty finish, the mark of its origin.
