Produttori del Barbaresco is one of the most successful co-op cellars in Italy. Its 52 members cover around 250 acres of vineyards, many among the most coveted Cru’s in the region. With roots dating back to Domizio Cavazza and the inception of the region, to study the history of this estate is to study the history of Barbaresco itself. The Produttori employ traditional winemaking techniques in the cellar, and their focused single vineyard Riserva bottlings truly capture the personality of each Cru.
Moccagatta was renamed to the more historical name Muncagota in teh early 2010's, but earlier bottles bear the name Moccagatta. This 9.8 acre vineyard is on a ridge further from the Tanaro river. This ridge has more compact soil and high- er calcium levels that create bigger tannins in the wine then some of the other Produttori del Barbaresco single vineyard wines. The cooler climate and higher elevation of Muncagota (Moccagatta) give the wine a unique floral and mineral character. The first vintage was produced in 1967.
1996 was a stellar and structured vintage for Barbaresco and this wine is in the beginning of a very long excellent drinking window.
