As much as we love the complexity, rarity and cellar-worthiness of the wines we stock, we greatly appreciate pizza wine for its easy-drinking, easy-pairing nature. While we have many options at the shop, this is the first time that we've come across a single producer that carries all the shades of the pizza wines we want to drink. Poggio Anima is a joint venture between one of Tuscany's rising stars, Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie in Montalcino and his U.S.A. importer Ronnie Sanders of Vine Street Imports. The idea is straightforward: to source great vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines or leftover juice from a winery; instead, they are the result of long-standing relationships with reputable and respected growers throughout Italy.
These are honest wines that are enjoyable on their own, but really shine with a dancer partner, that partner being pizza or red sauce based pastas. These are not wines to put away as birth year bottles for your kid, but rather highly enjoyable wines that strike 3 resonant notes. Think of them as a catchy Ramones tune. With that in mind, Hey, ho, let's go....
Impressions: A brooding wine with ripe dark plums, figs, balsamico and sage dominating the aromatics. Plush and velvet-like on the palate with a rounded acidity that leads towards a dusty/woody tannic bite with ending notes of forest floor, and cigar box.
