Pi (π) is an irrational number representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, but according to our calculations 3/14 is a great excuse to stuff our faces with pizza! There is no better person to ask about pizza & wine pairings than our very own Danny. If it were up to him, Pi-Day would be a nationally observed holiday.

To celebrate Pi-Day, this Thursday 3/14, we asked Danny to assemble a 3 pack of "pizza wine" along with some suggested pies from some of our favorite spots in Portland.

2021 Fondo Bozzole, 'Giano' Lambrusco Provincia di Mantova - Lombardia, Italy
Impressions: This Lambrusco Salamino opens with notes of fresh blackberries, violets, nasturtium, and black peppercorns. Excellent acidty with compact bubbles that form a soft mousse. Finishes dry, herbal, savory and smoky. Danny Suggests: "Oven & Shaker's Margherita. Margherita is a classic for a reason, Oven & Shaker's is simply amazing. Pro tip: add on Prosciutto di San Daniele to really set off the Lambrusco."

2021 Mario Bagella 'Isorso' Vermentino di Sardegna - Sardinia, Italy
Impressions: While the Vermentino grape is grown in a handful of regions across Italy and France, it unquestionably reaches its apex in Sardinia. Bagella’s opens with a lightly smoky mineral aroma, followed by sharp lime zest, grapefruit and spicy cinnamon. With time, increasingly intense aromas cascade from the glass, including ripe apricot, papaya and freshly baked bread. The palate is equally intriguing, with a pleasantly fleshy, creamy midpalate washed away by a clean, bright, strikingly mineral finish. Danny Suggests: "Pizzeria Otto's Mediterraneo is made for this Vermentino. It has castelvetranos, red onion, feta, garlic purée, mozzarella, rosemary & lemon. Sounds perfect to me."

2021 Cascina La Barbatella Barbera d'Asti - Piemonte, Italy
Impressions: A perfectly balanced, full bodied and complex Barbera crafted to be consumed young. Notes of figs, iron, violets, tamarind, bay leaf, and dried sage evolve from the glass. The palate is fresh with a lively acidity that introduces an elegant juicy texture. The dry finish is herbal, peppery, earthy and spicy. Danny Suggests: "Flor is close to Hot Lips Pizza so we've paired Barbera with many of their pies and the old school Meat Supreme is the winner. Pepperoni, house made Italian sausage, mushrooms, black olives, onions, green peppers, and mozzarella over a rich marinara base. It's a no brainer."

This specially priced 3 pack will be available through Thursday. Let the pizza pairings begin!
