Sergio's Pick

This has long been one of our favorite estates as they never put out anything less than a matured, and ready to drink Nebbiolo. Gorgeous notes of black cherry compote and dried roses sit over earthy tones of eucalyptus, iron, anise and bay leaf. The acidity is soft, yet energetic and sways a mineral-rich and juicy texture towards velvety tannins. The finish is lengthy and complex, with exit notes of dried herbs, cigar box, and forest floor. 45 minute decant recommended.

Marco Petterino is a tiny, and very much under-the-radar producer of the DOCG of Gattinara. With a mere 2½ hectares of vineyards in total, his production is about 1300 cases per year. Petterino’s holdings are exceptional for the appellation with vineyards in 3 of the top cru’s in Gattinara – Permolone, Castelle and Guardie which are all are southwest-facing. Here the soils are geologically very similar to those in the nearby Alps, including granites, polyphories, quartzes and numerous ferrous minerals which give the ground its typical reddish hue.
