Alongside Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, Aglianico produces some of Italy’s most sought-after red wines. Among the most prized regions for Aglianico production is the Aglianico del Vulture DOC. Both the drawback and selling point for these wines is its seemingly limitless cellaring potential. Often these reds need at least a decade to begin to soften. So, what’s the answer to producing a younger, approachable style? Vinify it as a white wine, naturally.

Working exclusively within the Aglianico del Vulture, Cantina della Grazie is pushing the boundaries of what this varietal can do with their ‘Leuconoe’ white Aglianico offering. Complex white peach, pear, lychee and floral notes fly out of the glass. On the palate, you are surprisingly greeted first with a rich sliky texture that’s kept in check by an energetic acid backbone that leads to a spicy and surprisingly salty finish. The juxtapositions on the palate somehow work and at moments were reminiscent of Provençal and Rhone Valley whites. Incredibly food friendly and nice to cozy up with for winter.
