Cascina Iuli is a small co-op founded run by the oenologist Fabrizio Iuli. They are one of the only producers in Piemonte working with Slarina, an ancient Piemontese varietal that was near extinction and not even listed under Italy’s national registry of grape varieties. Highly aromatic with strawberry compote, dark cherry, dried roses and wet stones leading the way. The acidity is vibrant and carries a light bodied juicy frame that surprisingly ends with a rather firm velvet tannic structure with an earthy, peppery finish. Reminiscent of other Piemontese rarities such as Freisa and Pelaverga. Thankfully this varietal has been rescued, this was a joy to drink.
