* A March 2 Shades Red Wine Club Selection

While the popularity of international grape varietals has shifted towards a focus on indigenous ones, certain grapes have thrived outside of their native homeland. Aside from Bordeaux, one of our favorite regions for Merlot happens to be along the Italian/Slovenian border. Familiar aromatic notes of cassis, blackberry compote, pottery soil and cacao welcome you from the glass. The palate is where the terroir is reflected in a vibrant, fresh acid profile that seamlessly lifts a velvet-like, plush texture before a long, savory and slightly smoky finish leaves behind notes of dried thyme, incense and tobacco. No decanting or cellaring necessary, these wines are best enjoyed within 5 years of their release.

Widely considered to be one of the best producers in Slovenia, Edi Simcic`s wines are truly traditional and unique. In the cellars, none of the wines are rushed to be ready, and a masterful use of oak results in complex and slightly (but very attractively) oxidative wines.
