Since taking over the winery in 2001, Damiano Ciolli saw the potential of the indigenous Cesanese varietal and switched the focus of this once bulk red wine producing estate, to crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines. Only a miniscule amount of Ciolli’s top selection reserve ‘Cirsium’ is produced from nearly 70-year-old vines sourced from a small single vineyard. Aromatically complex with blueberry compote, underripe strawberries, violets, dried roses, white pepper, tarragon, and wet concrete open in the glass. The structure is high toned and well balanced with sharp acidity carrying a rich velvety-juicy body that morphs into a supple and firm tannin profile with a peppery, herbal, and surprisingly floral and salty finish. Despite its full-bodied demeanor, there is a prevalent freshness to this wine that maintains its balance throughout. Decanting recommended.
