Sergio's Pick
Despite the winery being just over 12 years old, Boffalora is well on its way to becoming a benchmark producer in the Valtellina. Winemaker Giuseppe Guglielmo is the one man show at this estate. Given the steeply terraced vineyards at altitudes reaching 2000 feet above sea level, this is truly a labor of love. Working almost exclusively with Nebbiolo vines, referred to locally as Chiavennasca, Boffalora captures its mountainous surroundings in every bottle. The aromas are classic Nebbiolo notes of red cherries, roses, leather, and tar with pronounced earthy notes of pine needles, and eucalyptus. The fresh mouthwatering acidity cuts through a mineral, juicy body that give way to firm velvety tannins with a long, herbal, smoky, and earthy finish. A distinctly alpine structure that contrasts neighboring Piemontese Nebbiolo brilliantly. Ideal makeup for long term aging, decanting recommended for enjoying now.
La Sasa is a single vineyard plot of 70+ year old vines. This cuvée is only made in outstanding vintages.
