3 Viñerones is an absolute passion project, dedicated to making one wine to the highest possible quality. This wonderful madness is the small side project of three friends - Carlos Sánchez, Javier García and Nacho Jiménez. Carlos & Javier both have small wineries themselves in the Gredos Mountains, 2hrs from Madrid, whilst Nacho is the owner of wine shop and distributor La Tintorería in Madrid.
They buy grapes from grower Luis Fernández, who owns a tiny vineyard planted in 1982 on one of the most sought-after terroirs in the zone of El Bardallo in Rioja Alta. Luis runs a nearby petrol station and has been carefully tending his cherished family vineyard as a hobby. Following biodynamic principles for the past 8 years, these vines are coddled to perfection. 2015 was the first vintage ever made of this wine, and although it is in tiny quantities, it has already caught the attention of critics for its atypical and refined style.
Rioja has gained its fame by aging its red for extended periods in oak, resulting in dry, spicy wines of great depth but without much freshness. This wine is the antithesis of this - barely a year in oak, and fermented with whole bunches for added zip. Still packs the punch of the region, but with a different timbre. A shy, earthy nose slowly opens and reveals intriguing aromas of mulberry, mint and red cherry, whilst the palate is restrained and structured with fresh and lovely tannins. The wine really carries and has great freshness. Modern Rioja in the best sense of the word. Open ahead of time and decant if possible.
